Team Homan "2005 Ontario Curling Tour Women’s Champions”

The Team:

Skip, Rachel Homan: At 16 years of age, Rachel has been curling for 12 years. Goals include skipping a World Championship junior curling team for Canada and participating in the Olympics. Curling Role Model: Mark Homan

Vice, Emma Miskew: At 16 years of age, Emma has also been curling for 12 years. Emma similarly has aspirations of claiming a World title along with becoming an Olympic medalist. Curling Role Model: Sandra Schmirler

Second, Alison Kreviazuk: At 16 years of age, Alison has been curling for 9 years. Alison believes in the full potential of her team and looks forward to the time when they are competing in the Scott and World Juniors. Curling Role Model: Jenn Hanna

Lead, Nicole Johnston: At 17 years of age, Nicole has been curling for 8 years. Nicole is looking forward to the time when she is able to participate in the Scott Tournament of Hearts and beyond. Curling Role Model: Brad Gushue

Background:

The “Homan” rink was formed in the fall of 2001 when the girls were only 12 and 13 years old. Since this first encounter, the four members of the team have remained unchanged in the subsequent four years. This level of commitment to the team and to each other is unusual for junior curling and is clearly one of the foundations to their success. In their four years together these girls have achieved unprecedented regional and provincial successes in all age categories and, while still only 16 years old, their list of accomplishments is lengthy.

At the ages of 13 and 14, the Homan rink won their first of three straight Ontario Bantam Provincial Championships, an unprecedented accomplishment, and one very unlikely to be repeated. Their successes are not limited to bantam curling however. In 2004, Team Homan captured the Ontario Junior Women’s Curling Tour Championship. In 2005, Team Homan did that one better, capturing the 2005 Ontario Women’s Curling Tour Championship, after defeating three women’s teams that have or soon will be representing Canada at the Women’s, Senior Women’s, and Junior World Women’s Curling Championships.

Team “Homan” Goals:

Every year since their first game together in the fall of 2001, the Homan team has continually met and exceeded their predetermined goals as individuals and as a team. As a result of their dedication, hard work, and strong network of support, the girls have been inwardly focused and driven toward success. The interest and support for the team from friends, family and area curling clubs continues to grow. With this mounting support, coupled with the benefits of Earle Morris’ strong leadership, there is every confidence that all of the team goals will be achieved.

While these girls have been together for only 4 years, they have set new standards for success across bantam, junior and women’s curling in the Province of Ontario. This success came at a time when these girls were between the ages of 12 and 16 years old, prior to reaching the minimum age for Junior curling. As a team, the Homan rink will now officially embark on their 4 years of junior curling. In this context, their long term goals will undoubtedly be met.

Goals for 2005/06:

• Ontario Junior Women’s Champions;
• Place in the top 3 at the National Junior Championships;
• Ontario Junior Curling Tour Champions.

Longer Term Goals:

Within the next 5 years, the team expects to continually improve and achieve the following goals:

• Repeat Ontario Junior Women’s Champions;
• Canadian National Junior Women’s Champions;
• World Junior Women’s Champions;
• Repeat Ontario Curling Tour Champions.
